COLORS and DYEING of CHUNGA FIBERS
After being sun-bleached, the fine fibers stripped from Chunga palm fronds are dyed using extracts of various berries and fruits.
*YELLOW is derived from native turmeric!
*BROWN/ORANGE-BROWN after boiling, in water, shavings of cocobolo wood (known as rose-wood)!
*BLUISH/BLACKISH colors are derived from fruit of the Jagua tree!
*PURPLE and PINK are extracted from leaves of Pucham, a violet-colored jungle plant!
*OLIVE-GREEN is derived from organic-rich swamp oil!
*BLACK fibers are produced by burying pre-dyed fibers for two days in mud along the shores of rivers!
Wounaan baskets embrace a predominance of various shades of
yellow, orange, red and brown,
with blue fibers being less common than the others.
