fine traditional indigeneus colombian craft,
hand woven by a indigenous Wounaan woman, made with 100% Werregue Palm Fiber, nice decorated and beautiful geometric forms and desing
. Unique spiritual piece woven in the manner of a millenary tradition, new in perfect condition!
The Wounaan or Noanamá indigenous people
inhabit the Chocoan jungles, recognized in the artisan world for the fineness of their crafts, baskets or “cocas de Werregue”. They are people of water and forest who are settled on the banks of Bajo San Juan and inhabit the basin to its mouth. Surrounded by natural exuberance, they hunt, fish, gather fruits and have small family crops.
To establish a connection with their environment, women are adorned with collars of beads and painted with Achiote and Jagua
. They are tireless workers, help men in the work of the forest and are dedicated to making baskets with the fiber of the werregue palm (Astrocaryum standleyanum). The inhabitants of the Pichimá farmhouse are the most recognized artisans for this work.
The baskets are made with the spiral technique, using a cord like “soul” or “gut”, around which a thinner colored yarn is woven
. The fibers are dried in the sun and the thin wires twisted and polished by friction. Formerly, small baskets of crude color were made, but the influence of the missionary nuns motivated the artisans to weave bigger baskets and to capture orange and black figures with the application of natural dyes, such as Achiote or Puchama, which women sow in their home gardens. The figures that appear in the baskets allude to situations of daily life, images of the past, elements of nature and beliefs or geometric figures.
