Description
Mid-1860's through 1870's Fanchon bonnets, also known as a Half-Bonnets or Dinner bonnets. As the popularity of parasols made the full bonnet less of a necessity, a lighter, less bulky cap came into fashion. Fanchon in French means freedom, and the ladies of the era must have felt much lighter and freer wearing this little slip of a bonnet instead of the heavy and enclosing bonnets previously worn. The cap consists of a half-oval brim with an attached lace bavolet. The bonnet ties under the chin with wide satin ribbons. Unlike the traditional bonnet, this bonnet could also be worn indoors with a nice visiting dress or dinner dress.There are seven available options:
Two YELLOW: Bonnet #1 is made of sunshine yellow dyed natural straw. It is edged with white 100% cotton braid and is decorated on both sides with matching sprays of flowers in shades of peach and yellow. The bavolet is 9 1/2" long white, low luster scalloped lace which approximates period cotton lace. The bonnet is 15" across and 6 1/2" deep. The fanchon ties under the chin with white colored 1 1/2" double-faced satin ribbon.
Bonnet #2 is made of loose woven natural straw with stripes of pale peach, pale green, pale gray and pale yellow. It is edged with yellow 100% cotton bias tape and is decorated on the right side with vintage fabric flowers in shades of peach , brown and yellow. The bavolet is 7" long off-white, low luster scalloped lace which approximates period cotton lace. The bonnet is 14" across and 7 1/4" deep. The fanchon ties under the chin with yellow 2 3/8" wide double-faced satin ribbon.
BLACK: Wide woven bands of natural colored straw. The bonnet is edged with black cotton bias tape The lace bavolet is a pretty scalloped floral patterned black scalloped lace about 4" wide. The left side of the bonnet is decorated with a silver-gray fabric rose in full bloom. It is accented with narrow black leaves and narrow black feathers. The 1 1/3" wide black ribbon has an interesting woven design of dull and shiny alternating stripes. The bonnet is 15" across and 6 1/4" deep. A small comb is stitched to the middle of the back edge to help keep the bonnet in place.
WHITE: Natural tan straw in a basket weave. The bonnet is edged with white, woven 100% cotton braid. The bavolet is made of 10" wide, low luster scalloped floral lace. The bonnet ties with 1 1/2" wide white double faced satin ribbon which is formed into three loops on each side of the face. The bonnet can be easily trimmed with flowers to match your various outfits.
PINK: Natural straw base made of rows of straw stitched about every 1/2" with a over and under stitch. The bonnet is edged with dusty pink cotton bias tape. The bavolet is made of 4" scalloped black floral design lace. The left side is decorated with roses in pale pink and rose shades, accented with two natural looking fabric leaves. The ties are 1" wide pale pink double faced satin ribbon. The dinner bonnet is 14 1/2" wide and 6" deep.
RED: Natural straw in narrow ribbons woven into wider bands which are woven together to make the base. The bonnet is edged with bright red 100% cotton braid. The white lace floral design bavolet is 3 inches wide with a scalloped edge. The inside of the brim is decorated with tiny white rosebuds and green rose leaves. The ties are made of bright red 1/2" wide double faced satin ribbon which is worked into triple loops at each side. The bonnet measures 15" across and 6 1/2" deep.
ROYAL BLUE: Wide woven bands of natural colored straw. The bonnet is edged wit royal blue 100% cotton braid. The bavolet is made of exquisite black lace, 11" long. The edge is scalloped and the design features flowers and leaves. The left side of the bonnet is decorated with a realistic-looking fabric flower, a golden sunflower with brown and green center and and large green leaves. The ties are made of 1 1/2" wide double faced, royal blue satin ribbon. The dinner bonnet is 15 1/2" wide and 7 1/4" deep.
